Mindset – The Fifth Beatle?

Early one Sunday morning I was on the phone with one of my sisters, talking about the Pillars.

Same conversation we’ve had for years, mostly nutrition and exercise. We both have MS, so health has always been common ground for us.

This time I brought up Mindset. How it shapes the way I handle stress. How it decides whether I sleep right. How it runs the show on when and what I eat, fasting included. How it’s the difference between showing up for exercise and finding a very good reason not to.

I’d already started calling Mindset the Fifth Pillar. The Fifth Beatle, we joke. The piece that had been standing just off to the side the whole time, waiting on an intro.

But laying it out loud for her, something shifted. A lot of ideas sound airtight rattling around in my own head. The real test is saying them to another person and watching whether they hold up. This one didn’t just hold up, it played on repeat for the rest of the day, which is usually how I know something real just happened.

The more we talked, the less Mindset sounded like a fifth Pillar and the more it sounded like the ground the other four were standing on.

Mindset is not a Pillar. It’s the damn Foundation.

The Pillars are the structure. They’re only as strong as what’s under them. Get the Mindset wrong and the Pillars wobble, no matter how solid they look on paper. I’ve got plenty of proof of that. I’ll spare you the details (for now).

The Fifth Beatle? Not anymore.

It’s the stage they perform on.
